Pope Leo XIV led the Angelus from the Apostolic Palace on Oct. 18, 2026, following his discharge from Gemelli Hospital after surgery for lung cancer.
Speaking from a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square, the Pope reflected on the day’s Gospel reading, Matthew 22:15-21. In the passage, the Pharisees question Jesus about paying taxes to the emperor. Jesus asks to see the denarius used for the tax and tells them to give the emperor what belongs to the emperor and God what belongs to God.
Pope Leo said Jesus’ Kingdom does not eliminate human roles and responsibilities. He urged people to live truthfully, without servile fear or hypocrisy, and to remain free to do good.
The Pope also said he would gradually resume his activities after passing through a delicate phase. He thanked those who had prayed for him and expressed gratitude to the doctors, nurses and other staff members of Gemelli Hospital.
“I have truly sensed your support,” Pope Leo said. He concluded by thanking those present and wishing them a good Sunday.
The Church marked the 100th World Mission Day during the Angelus. Pope Leo asked for prayers that the Church remain faithful to the mandate of the risen Lord to proclaim the good news.
