Pope Leo XIV released his message for the 2026 World Youth Day on Nov. 3, ahead of the diocesan celebration scheduled for Nov. 22.

Reflecting on the theme “Take courage! I have overcome the world” from John 16:33, the pope urged young people to bring Christ both their personal questions and the wounds dividing societies and countries.

“Bring to Christ your questions and your wounds, but also the wounds that tear apart your societies and set your countries against one another,” Pope Leo said.

Courage rooted in Christ

Pope Leo said Christian courage comes from Christ’s presence. He connected that courage with the Resurrection, which he said brings humanity life, truth, freedom, justice and peace.

He also described victory over the world as the freedom to love without counting the cost. In a wounded world, he urged Christians to offer love, peace and hope.

The pope encouraged young people to recognize their limitations and accept help rather than waiting until they had achieved perfection.

“Do not wait until you are perfect before opening yourselves to Him. He comes to meet you just as you are,” Pope Leo said.

Looking toward Seoul

The message was signed Oct. 22, the feast of St. John Paul II. Pope Leo also urged young people to prepare their hearts for the next international World Youth Day, scheduled for Aug. 3-8, 2027, in Seoul, South Korea.

He said Christ offers peace and reconciliation to communities, directing young people toward that hope as they prepare for the Seoul gathering.
