The Vatican said Wednesday that Pope Leo XIV does not need additional treatment after surgery for localized pulmonary adenocarcinoma.
Final histological and molecular biology examinations of tissue removed during the Oct. 13 operation confirmed the diagnosis and found that the disease was localized, the Vatican Press Office said.
Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, who reported on the pope’s postoperative recovery, said the results confirmed pulmonary adenocarcinoma. A subsequent oncological assessment determined that no further treatment was necessary.
Pope Leo XIV was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Oct. 17 and returned to the Vatican. He held his first general audience since the operation on Oct. 21.
