VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has returned to the papal apartments in Vatican City State after being discharged from Gemelli Hospital following lung surgery on Oct. 13.
Professor Stefano Margaritora, who performed the operation, described it as routine and said the Pope requires about 10 more days for a full recovery. Margaritora is professor of thoracic surgery at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and directs the Thoracic Surgery Unit at the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital Foundation.
Margaritora called Pope Leo an “ideal patient” and said the scheduled Nov. 6-17 visit to Latin America should proceed. “There are no clinical reasons why this visit should not take place,” he said.
Pope Leo is also set to lead the Angelus on Sunday.
