Pope Leo XIV has authored the foreword for a new edition of YouCat: Love Forever, a catechetical text designed to assist young people in preparing for marriage. The updated volume is scheduled for release in November, offering what the pontiff describes as his most extensive public reflection on human love and the Church’s invitation to youth.

A Reflection on Covenant and Commitment

In the introduction, Pope Leo XIV characterizes love not merely as an emotion but as a deliberate choice. He defines it as “a deep commitment to the other, a decision, a journey and a covenant for life.” This framing distinguishes between transient feelings and enduring fidelity, presenting marriage as a lifelong bond rooted in mutual dedication.

The Pope connects this understanding of love to human nature itself. He suggests that the desire for love reveals an inherent orientation toward God and toward another person. To illustrate this point, he references Saint Augustine’s Confessions, specifically the opening line: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, O God.” This phrase also serves as the motto on Pope Leo XIV’s papal coat of arms, which features a burning heart pierced by an arrow—a traditional symbol of Saint Augustine.

Biblical Foundations and Global Voices

The foreword draws heavily on Scripture to ground its teaching. Pope Leo XIV cites Augustine’s commentary on Psalm 127 regarding the sanctity of marriage. He also references the Letter to the Corinthians, particularly chapter 13, to outline the essential qualities of love. These biblical anchors provide a theological framework for the practical advice offered in the catechism.

The new edition incorporates testimonies from young Catholics across more than 30 countries. These personal accounts are intended to show how faith and marriage intersect in diverse cultural contexts. By including voices from around the world, the text seeks to resonate with a global audience while maintaining doctrinal clarity.

Continuity in Youth Catechesis

The YouCat (Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church) was first published in 2011. The original volume featured a foreword by Pope Benedict XVI and has since been translated into dozens of languages, becoming a standard resource for youth ministry worldwide. YouCat: Love Forever, which focuses specifically on marriage preparation, saw its initial publication in May 2025. That first edition appeared just one week after the death of Pope Francis.

The new release updates that earlier work with fresh content and the current pontiff’s personal introduction. It maintains the accessible style of the original YouCat series while addressing contemporary challenges faced by young couples. The November launch marks a significant moment in the Church’s ongoing effort to equip the next generation with clear, faithful teaching on family life.
