Pope Leo XIV departs Rome at 7:50 a.m. local time on November 6. He is scheduled to arrive in Montevideo, Uruguay, later that afternoon at Carrasco/General Cesáreo L. Berisso International Airport. This visit marks the first papal trip to Uruguay since St. John Paul II visited in 1988.
Uruguay: Diplomatic and Pastoral Engagements
In Montevideo, the pope will attend a welcome ceremony at Plaza Independencia and meet with government authorities and the diplomatic corps. He will also pay a courtesy visit to Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi at the Edificio José Artigas.
Religious observances in Uruguay include Vespers at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and Sts. Philip and James on November 6. The following day, the pope travels to Paysandú to celebrate Mass at Parque París Londres. He returns to Montevideo for meetings with the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe and representatives from the Catholic University of Uruguay.
A prayer vigil is scheduled for the Centenary Stadium in Montevideo on November 7. On November 8, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Florida before departing for Argentina.
Argentina: First Visit in Decades
The pontiff’s arrival in Argentina on November 8 marks the first papal visit to the country since 1987. He lands at Jorge Newbery Airpark and meets with President Javier Milei.
On November 9, the itinerary includes a visit to Pequeño Cottolengo Don Orione de Claypole and Mass at the Monumento de los Españoles. The pope will also meet with the work community at the Catholic University of Argentina and engage with interfaith leaders at Palacio San Martín.
Vespers are planned for November 9 at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, where he will celebrate with bishops and synodal teams. On November 10, Pope Leo XIV travels to Córdoba to celebrate Mass at the Military Aviation School and meet with clergy at the Cathedral of Córdoba. A youth vigil is held in Buenos Aires that same day.
The final Mass in Argentina takes place on November 11 at the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján. The pope departs Buenos Aires at 2 p.m. local time to begin the final leg of his journey.
Peru: Return to Former Diocese
Pope Leo XIV arrives in Lima, Peru, at 5:30 p.m. on November 11. He will meet with Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori that evening. The pontiff has deep ties to Peru, having served as a missionary and bishop there for two decades before his election.
On November 12, he meets with the bishops of Peru and leads prayer at the Cathedral Basilica of Lima. A youth prayer vigil is scheduled for the Estadio Monumental “U” in Lima later that day.
The itinerary shifts to Chiclayo on November 13, where Pope Leo XIV served as diocesan bishop from 2015 to 2023. He will celebrate Mass near Pampas de Pimentel and visit a chapel dedicated to St. Oscar Romero. Meetings are planned with synodal teams at the Shrine of Our Lady of Peace, as well as with representatives from Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo Catholic University and priests of the Diocese of Chiclayo.
On November 14, the pope crowns a statue of the Virgin Mary at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Chiclayo. He also celebrates Mass in Santa Cruz de Succhabamba. The day concludes with a prayer service in Chiclayo marking the closing of the jubilee year of St. Turibius of Mogrovejo.
