Solidarity is the recognition that we are responsible for one another. It is, in John Paul II’s words, not a feeling of vague compassion but a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good — to the good of all and of each, because we are all really responsible for all.

Solidarity binds rich and poor, near and far, and present and future generations, and it stands against the indifference that treats others as strangers.
