The Catholic Diocese of Ségou in Mali opened its 2026-2027 pastoral session on artificial intelligence and human dignity Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Gabriel-Cissé Centre in Ségou.
The diocese plans to adopt a “Diocesan Charter for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence.” Bishop Augustin Traoré, who delivered the opening address, said the diocese wishes to understand the implications of new technologies and encourage their responsible use while respecting human dignity.
Pastoral and ethical questions
The session, running from Oct. 14 through Oct. 17, considers both pastoral opportunities and ethical risks associated with artificial intelligence. Participants are examining its sociocultural and pastoral effects in Africa and Mali.
They have also been asked to propose protections for young people and personal data, as well as ways to combat disinformation.
Eloi Dakouo served as guest speaker and presented artificial intelligence through ethical, sociocultural and anthropological questions considered in light of the Gospel. Participants then worked in groups on how AI is perceived, used and challenged in parish settings.
Parishes taking part include Kolongo, Niono, Markala, Bélèko, Fana, Dioïla and the cathedral parish of Ségou.
The first day concluded with Holy Mass, communal prayer and fraternal fellowship.
