Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington has called on Catholics to oppose two proposed constitutional amendments in Virginia, urging the faithful to support their civic engagement through prayer and fasting.

In a video message posted to the diocese’s YouTube channel on September 30, Bishop Burbidge described the ballot initiatives as “two radically unjust ballot initiatives.” He emphasized that the diocesan effort is spiritual as well as political.

“Our ‘Catholics Vote No’ campaign is rooted in prayer and fasting,” Bishop Burbidge said. “It would be a powerful force if all in the Diocese of Arlington were united in these efforts.”

The Ballot Measures

Virginia voters will decide on two significant changes to the state constitution during the upcoming election. Early voting began on September 18, with Election Day scheduled for November 3.

One proposed amendment would enshrine a right to abortion in the state constitution. The measure includes third-trimester restrictions but allows exceptions when the patient’s health is at risk or if the pregnancy cannot survive outside the womb.

A second ballot question seeks to remove the existing constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. This provision has been unenforceable since a 2015 United States Supreme Court decision. The new language would affirm that two adults may marry regardless of sex, gender, or race.

Spiritual Preparation

The Diocese of Arlington has launched a specific campaign to mobilize the faithful ahead of the vote. Bishop Burbidge outlined particular spiritual disciplines for October to accompany the civic action.

During the month of October, Catholics in the diocese are asked to pray the Stations of the Cross. The fasting guidelines specify eating only one full meal and abstaining from meat.

On Sundays, the faithful are invited to pray the rosary and fast from social media for at least a few hours, particularly before and after Mass. These practices are intended to unite the diocese in preparation for the November election.
